{"id":10,"date":"2024-01-12T15:33:26","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T15:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.espacotalassa.com\/?page_id=10"},"modified":"2026-05-04T12:39:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T12:39:30","slug":"cetaceans","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/espacotalassa.com\/en\/cetaceans\/","title":{"rendered":"Cetaceans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A total of <strong>29 species of cetaceans<\/strong> have been recorded in the waters of the Azores.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Over <strong>thousands of hours spent at sea<\/strong>, <strong>Espa\u00e7o Talassa<\/strong> has encountered <strong>28 of these species<\/strong>, including some rarely seen in the archipelago such as the <strong>Bryde\u2019s whale (Balaenoptera edeni)<\/strong>, <strong>long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas)<\/strong>, <strong>Fraser\u2019s dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei)<\/strong>, <strong>rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis)<\/strong>, and both the <strong>dwarf (Kogia sima)<\/strong> and <strong>pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps)<\/strong>.<br>According to beaked whale specialists, our team has also documented sightings of the <strong>True\u2019s beaked whale (Mesoplodon mirus)<\/strong> \u2014 a particularly elusive species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some cetacean species are <strong>resident year-round<\/strong> in the Azorean waters, others appear only <strong>seasonally<\/strong>, following migratory routes and oceanic food sources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A total of 29 species of cetaceans have been recorded in the waters of the Azores.
