Their courage and skill at sea inspired <strong>Herman Melville<\/strong> to write his legendary tale, <em>Moby Dick<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last <strong>30 years<\/strong>, it has been strictly <strong>forbidden to harm cetaceans<\/strong> in the Azores.<br>The south coast of <strong>Pico Island<\/strong>, favoured by sperm whales, has become one of the best whale-watching sites in the world. Here, guided by <strong>Lu\u00eds and Paulo<\/strong> at the <em>Vigia da Queimada<\/em> lookout, you can observe whales up close \u2014 respectfully and responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our project goes beyond observation. It includes an introduction to the <strong>whaling culture and traditions<\/strong> of Lajes \u2014 where the last whalers became the first whale watchers. These men and women are living witnesses to a profound transformation: from hunting whales to protecting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <strong>wildlife observation holidays<\/strong> that respect both the animals and local culture are a natural continuation of this story. One moment the ocean is calm and reflective, the next it\u2019s alive with movement and sound.
