Ein besseres Verständnis der Tiere, die wir beobachten, hilft uns nicht nur, sie zu schützen, sondern schärft auch unser Bewusstsein für den Lebensraum, den sie mit anderen Arten teilen — auch mit uns, dem Homo sapiens, der ebenso Teil dieses Ökosystems ist.

Diese Philosophie und die wachsende Zahl von Anfragen zur Zusammenarbeit in der Foto-Identifikation haben uns dazu inspiriert, unsere Fotodatenbank aufzubauen.

Ziel ist kein neuer Katalog, sondern ein offenes, gemeinschaftliches Werkzeug für alle — neugierige Besucher, Walbeobachter, Studierende und Forschende —, in dem Bilder hochgeladen, geteilt und mit bestehenden Identifikationskatalogen abgeglichen werden können.

Wichtigste Referenz dieser Arbeit bleibt der Pionierkatalog, der 1987 auf den Azoren von IFAW, Dr. Jonathan Gordon und Dr. Lisa Steiner erstellt wurde und bis heute die Foto-Identifikation im gesamten Atlantik prägt.
