Birds of Pico

Bird watching from Lajes to the mountain natural habitats

Half-day activity – approximately 4 hours

Discover the diverse birdlife of Pico Island, from the seaside “fajã lávica” of Lajes do Pico to the mountain habitats of the Caveiro Natural Reserve.

Departure: 08:30 from the Espaço Talassa base.

Begin birding along the Lajes lava platform (Geopark), home to many Common Terns, the rare Roseate Tern, Plovers, and larger species such as the Grey Heron and the elegant Little Egret. On lucky days, you might even spot the elusive Green Heron or small Sandpipers.

Continue to the Caveiro Natural Reserve, where volcanic lakes and Laurisilva forest create rich habitats for several Azorean subspecies, including the Atlantic Canary, Chaffinch, and tiny Goldcrest. American migratory species like the American Wigeon and Ring-necked Duck can also often be seen.
