Tailing the Great Whales

General Information

• Whale watching, whaling culture and plenty of talk about cetaceans, with blue whales as the headliners.
• Blue whales don’t turn up to order, so we can’t guarantee them. But our data shows the chances are good at this time of year.
• Welcome and transfers from Pico airport (Horta airport on Faial: supplement, see “Not included”).
• 7 nights’ accommodation with breakfast at Hotel “Whale’come ao Pico” (2**; room according to group size, see prices below).
• 5 trips at sea (or equivalent half-days, weather dependent).
• Full day exploring Pico.
• Daily talks + extra special talk about Blue Whale.
• Insurance and whale-watching permit included.
• Group size: maximum 12 (boat capacity); programme requires a minimum of 10 participants (full refund if there are fewer).

What’s the plan?

Whaling Heritage Day

• Full day exploring Pico’s whaling tradition:
  – São Roque whaling station
  – Calheta de Nesquim boathouse
  – Vigia da Queimada lookout
  – Whaler’s Museum in Lajes (closed Mondays)

Talks & Science Sessions

• Daily 6pm sessions: sea birds, turtle survey, life of whales, nature slideshow, photo-id.
• Special presentation by our biologist on cetacean ecology/biology and our Blue Whale research in the Atlantic.

Itinerary may be adjusted for weather, sea conditions, safety, group size, and animal presence.

What else?

• Insurance (general assistance, illness, accident, rescue operations).
• Waterproof jacket and lifevest included.
• Whale-watching/cetacean observation permit.
• Pico airport transfers.
  

Not included

• Picnic or lunch.
• Extra charge for arrivals or departures from Horta: 45 € per person each way (transfer and ferry tickets).
• Half board available at Whale’come Bistrot — €140/person (7 dinners).

Attention

Due to the special nature of our activities, each customer declares to be over five years old, not pregnant, and in perfect physical and mental health. Espaço Talassa reserves the right to refuse boarding to any client who does not meet these conditions. Clients will not receive any refund or compensation if these requirements are not met.

Prices per group, room included (pp = per person). The more you travel together, the less you pay per person.
